How to help a friend?
 |
When you finally decide to talk
to him or her, think about:
- Choose the right moment, when your friend is sober. Morning
can be a good moment.
- Say to him/her that you care about them and that you don’t
want to loose their friendship.
- Don’t accuse them of being a junky, but try to make them understand
that you feel that things have changed lately, that you
are worried and that you are here to help him/her.
- Try and give precise information about the bad effects of drugs.
- Control your voice, don’t sound as if you where pitying that
friend, or annoyed at him/her.
- Don’t be surprised if your friend gets annoyed and says to
you that everything is normal and ok.
- Get informed about the places that offer professional help for drug
use problems. Keep in mind that if you suggest to accompany
your friend in that procedure, you will have to be with
him/her all the way.
- By having an open discussion with your friend about his/her drug
use, you are showing your concern for them.
You must know that you can really make a difference by confronting
a friend that has a drug problem. But the final result depends on
him/her, and if it doesn’t succeed, it is not your fault or
your responsibility, if things don’t happen the way you hoped
they would.
